Should you own your own domain?

I always hear stories such as "get your own domain and hosting" otherwise people are either not going to take you seriously or you risk that your blogging platform shuts you down for whatever reason. I think that getting your own domain is your choice and shouldn't be influenced by what others might perceive you as. There are severalvery successful blogs out there which do not have their own domain, and yet somehow are being taken seriously.

Calculated Risk

As a businessman, if you are starting out a blog you want to minimize as much as possible your recurring expenses. If you want to be in the red by up to $10/year for a domain plus up to $8/month for hosting then be my guest. But I would like to remind you that most people don't make the $100 minimum payout from adsense at least for a couple of months. So if you want to lose money right from the beginning - then be my guest.

What do you guys think about that?

Well said. I think the only reasons to own your domain is if you want to sell your site somewhere down the road or have greater flexibility with the site. I struggled with that whole idea in the past.

you can buy domain through GoDaddy then host it at Blogger.com like mine.

For just $10 a year!

domain blogs is good if you want to monetize it with PPP & other stuffs.

I agree with bm. You can even try your blog out for a while with a .blogspot address and then, if you decide to purchase your own domain name, you can keep blogger as the host and have the new domain name point to your blogger blog.
